hi,
I have a gbit up/down server in norway. And any port i use as ftp server on that server gives me no more than 200kb/s
What port can i use on the server that will allow me to transfer files at a faster rate? (And no this is not for illegal filesharing purposes). I have tried high ports like 20000's and 40000's and low ports like 81 and 1018, but no luck.
This is a project-sharing transfer of large amounts of data among my family.
I live in Glen Mor. |

| I didn't think that the campus networking department was limiting FTP transfers. I'll look into this. I'll check if they will be flexible with this. |

The rooms have a 100mbps connection to the network, however the campus uses a PacketShaper device to give priority to research and academic related work. So the bandwidth you "should be getting" depends on where you are on campus and what you are doing. In the residence halls most traffic that "might be illegal" is severely limited by the campus. Downloads from Microsoft can reach 100mbps. Downloads from unknown file sharing sites wont get more than 200kbps.
I forwarded your name and question to the campus networking folks to see if they will be flexible.

| Thanks Michael. Let me know when they reply back and with what. I guess you can't call it academic, even though it is, if I am transferring files from my dorm. |

This is their response
| Quote: | The chance of this issue is caused by packeteer is very small unless the packeteer mis-classified the traffic to P2P or default traffic. In this case we need verify the traffic on packeteer when FTP traffic is present.
There is another solution for this is to create a special class for the FTP server. This is not we like to use unless the issue is very serious and urgent, and is approved by managers.
