FAQ - Games

Why are games slow

The PacketShaper tries to prioritize webpages to be the most important traffic, and file sharing to be the least important. However the PacketShaper does not know what every program in the world is and therefore we need to tell it what is a game or what is a file sharing program. If a game you are playing is slow it is because the PacketShaper thinks it could be a file sharing program and is trying to make sure other people get onto the internet before you. To get better performance in your game you must notify us which game you are playing and help us identify what ports the game uses so we can accelerate the game for you.

How can I find out which ports my game uses

Start the game that is running and connect to the game server. Open up a DOS command prompt and run the following command: netstat -anb
Examine the results for the name of your game. Immediately above the game is the list of ports we need. The easiest way to send this information to us is by clicking on the window menu (the "C:\" icon at the top left) and then select Edit->Mark. Then click and drag the mouse around the text you want to send to us and press the Enter key. Then go to our Forums and post a message in the Gaming Performance forum with the name of your game as the new topic name.

Can I host games on the network

You are not allowed to run a server of any kind on Resnet. No incoming connections from outside of Resnet are allowed into the network, and room-to-room connections are limited by firewalls. It is almost guaranteed that you can not host a game with other people on the network. We are looking into ways of allowing games to be played between rooms and buildings.
